Strengths
One strength of this script is the premise the writer chose to work from. It’s a great idea to show us a story about Mary. She’s such a prominent figure in the Christian story, but so few cinematic depictions focus on her – she’s always stuck playing a supporting role to the star, Jesus. The focus on her makes this piece very unique, especially in a modern age with raising awareness of women in the world and in media. And Mary herself is a strength of the script. She’s a great character, well written. Seeing her be so strong, so wise, and such a central figure in the story is very refreshing, and it makes the movie feel unique in a sea of religious movies about Jesus and his apostles. Her relationship to Jesus, too, is so sweet and tender; it really makes us care for them. The demons, too, make the movie very memorable. Not many stories about Jesus depict the literal demons present, and the ones in this script are memorable and scary villains. Lucifer’s quiet moment with Mary, at the end, too, is quite memorable and adds depth to his character beyond just “evil.”
Prospects:
While the major studio system would be unlikely to target a project so heavily religious such as this one in favor of their typically more commercial and broadly appealing franchises and blockbusters, there is a very narrow but deep niche for Faith-Based content in the indie film world, so this might be able to find a good home there. One issue it could face is its budget – the period setting and costumes, the special effects for Lucifer and his demons, the vast amount of extras, characters, and locations – this would be a rather expensive project to film properly. Most of the Faith-Based market focuses on extremely low budget films so that they can remain profitable when targeted toward their niche, so perhaps a “budget” version of this script could be adapted to help keep costs in check, in addition to addressing some of the creative notes above. Otherwise, the best way to move this project forward will be to research producers who’ve had success with faith-based films and target them for submission.
